Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate

About Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate

Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate belongs to a group of medications called ‘Antibiotics and Corticosteroids’ used to treat bacterial eye infections or eye discomfort. It is also used in patients who have undergone eye surgeries. It is used to treat eye inflammation caused by allergies, shingles, iritis (inflammation of the coloured part of the eye (iris)), uveitis (inflammation of the middle layer of the eye (uvea)), eye injury, radiation, and chemical burns. A bacterial eye infection occurs when bacteria invade any part of the eyeball or its surrounding tissues, including the cornea (clear front surface of the eye) and the conjunctiva (thin membrane lining the outer eye and inner eyelids). Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate is used to prevent or treat only bacterial eye infections. It does not work against infections caused by viruses and fungus.

Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate contains two medicines, namely: Moxifloxacin (antibiotic) and Loteprednol etabonate (corticosteroid). Moxifloxacin belongs to a class of drugs called fluoroquinolone antibiotics that helps in treating and preventing a wide range of bacterial infections. It kills bacteria (bactericidal action) by preventing the synthesis of enzymes, namely DNA gyrase and Topoisomerase II and IV, which is essential for the growth and survival of the bacterial cell. Loteprednol etabonate belongs to the class of corticosteroids. It blocks prostaglandins' production (chemical messengers) that make the eye red, swollen, and itchy. Together, Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate prevents the spread of eye infections caused by bacteria, and also reduces inflammation and pain.

Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate is for ophthalmic use only. Your doctor will advise on how often you need to use Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate based on your medical condition. Some common side effects of Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate include redness in the eyes, blurred vision, burning or stinging sensation in the eye, and eye discomfort. These side effects do not require medical attention and gradually resolve over time. However, you are advised to consult your doctor if you experience any of the side effects persistently.

Please do not use Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate without consulting your doctor if you have damaged cornea, ulcers in the eye, eye infection, pus, open lesions in the eye, and glaucoma (a condition where the pressure inside the eye is increased). Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before using Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate. Avoid touching the eyedropper with bare hands or to the eyelids while administering drops, since it contaminates the dropper tip and solution. If you wear contact lenses, please inform your doctor since Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate may contain additives like Benzalkonium chloride that change the colour. Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate sometimes may make your eye red after administration; in such cases, please avoid wearing a lens until the eye becomes better. Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate might temporarily blur your vision, so avoid driving, or operating machines until your vision is clear.

Uses of Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate

Bacterial eye infections, allergic eye conditions.

Medicinal Benefits

Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate contains Moxifloxacin and Loteprednol etabonate. Moxifloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that acts against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It kills bacteria (bactericidal action) by preventing the synthesis of enzymes, namely DNA gyrase and Topoisomerase II and IV, which is essential for the growth and survival of the bacterial cell. Loteprednol etabonate is a corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory properties and acts by inhibiting the chemicals such as prostaglandins production (chemical messengers) that make the eye red, swollen, and itchy. It reduces symptoms associated with infection such as redness and irritation of the eye and decreases the risk of infections. Collectively, Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate treats and prevents bacterial eye infections and eye inflammation caused by allergies, shingles, iritis (inflammation of the coloured part of the eye (iris), uveitis (inflammation of the middle layer of the eye (uvea), eye injury, radiation, and chemical burns.

Disease/Condition Glossary

Bacterial eye infections: The common bacterial eye infections are conjunctivitis, stye, or keratitis. Conjunctivitis (pink eye) is the infection or inflammation of the conjunctiva (white part of the eye) and the inner eyelid. It is a highly contagious infection that is spread by secretions of the eye. Symptoms include redness, itchy, and discharge or crusting around the eye. A stye is a bump on the eyelid, which is also a common eye condition. Keratitis is the inflammation of the cornea that occurs due to frequent usage of contact lenses, injury, diabetes, or surgery.

FAQs

Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate contains Moxifloxacin and Loteprednol etabonate. Moxifloxacin is an antibiotic that prevents bacterial cells from dividing and repairing, thereby killing the bacteria. Loteprednol etabonate, a corticosteroid, blocks the production of prostaglandins (chemical messengers) that make the eye red, swollen and itchy. Collectively, Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate helps in relieving and treating symptoms of bacterial eye infections.

You are not recommended to stop using Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate without consulting your doctor even if you feel better. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cured. Therefore, use Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate for as long as your doctor has prescribed it, and if you experience any difficulty while using Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate, please consult your doctor.

If you are using other eye drops along with Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate, maintain an interval of at least 10 minutes before administering other medicines in the same eye to avoid dilution.

Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate is generally prescribed for 7 days. You should use this medicine for a duration prescribed by your doctor. Avoid prolonged use, as it may cause cataracts (clouding of the eye) and increase the second infection risk. If you use Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate for longer than 10 days, you may need frequent vision tests to check the pressure inside your eyes.

Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate can cause a blurry vision for some time in the beginning. Avoid driving and operating machinery in such cases until you feel better. If the effect persists longer, seek medical attention.

You are not recommended to wear contact lenses while using Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate as it contains benzalkonium chloride, a preservative that changes the colour of contact lens as it may be absorbed by soft contact lens. Benzalkonium chloride also causes irritation in the eye especially if you have disorders of cornea (transparent layer at the front of eye) or dry eyes. Therefore, you are advised to remove contact lenses before applying Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate and reinsert after 15 minutes of using Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate. Also, inform your doctor if you experience pain, stinging or abnormal sensation in the eye after using Moxifloxacin+loteprednol Etabonate.
